Sandstone arcades, river-bend old town
Bern is Switzerland's storybook capital, a UNESCO old town wrapped in a loop of the emerald Aare river. You stroll four miles of covered sandstone arcades, watch the medieval clock tower's figures whir to life, and join locals who float the bracing river on warm afternoons.
Two days is plenty for the compact center: time the Zytglogge clock tower's hourly show, climb the Gothic cathedral spire, browse the arcaded shopping streets, and visit the bears in their riverside park below the old town.
Genteel, tidy, and surprisingly laid-back for a capital. Bern moves slowly, with locals lingering in arcade cafes and swimming the river in summer. It feels more like a beautiful market town than a seat of government.
The arcaded Old Town (Altstadt) is the obvious choice, walkable and full of character within the river bend. The Länggasse university quarter and areas near the main station offer easier value and quick transit access.
On a warm day, do as locals do and float the Aare: enter upstream, drift with the strong current, and grab the handrails at marked exits like the Marzili. Only attempt it as a confident swimmer.
May to September brings river swimming, rooftop terraces, and Alpine day trips in full swing. Autumn is crisp and golden; December adds Christmas markets under the arcades. Winters are cold but rarely harsh in the city.
Bern's airport is tiny, so most arrive by train: Zurich Airport is just over an hour away by direct rail. The station sits at the old town's edge, and everything central is an easy walk.
Swiss German is spoken, though German, French, and English get you far. Switzerland uses francs, not euros, and is pricey. Shops close early and most stay shut on Sundays, so plan provisions ahead.
