Los Angeles isn't one city but a constellation of them, stitched by freeways and palm-lined boulevards. You'll trade beach mornings for canyon hikes, world-class art for taco trucks, and Hollywood glitz for hidden neighborhood gems. It rewards anyone willing to roam beyond the obvious.
How long to stay?
A day or two: ride the carousel at Santa Monica Pier, hike to the Griffith Observatory for the Hollywood Sign and skyline, graze Grand Central Market downtown, then catch sunset over the Pacific. Add the Walk of Fame if you must.
Three or four days lets LA breathe. Spend a morning at The Getty's hilltop galleries, a day at Universal Studios Hollywood, explore LACMA and The Broad downtown, picnic in Griffith Park, and detour to the La Brea Tar Pits or the coast.
Laid-back, image-conscious and wildly diverse. Mornings are for hiking and green juice, afternoons for galleries or the beach, nights for rooftop bars. Creative energy is everywhere, but you'll spend real time in the car between scenes.
Santa Monica and Venice suit beach lovers; Hollywood and Los Feliz put you near nightlife and Griffith Park. Downtown is walkable and arts-rich, while West Hollywood balances dining and design. Pick one base to limit driving.
Embrace the freeway timing game: do beach and outdoor things early, save museums for midday heat, and never plan a cross-town dash at rush hour. A car or rideshares are essential; transit covers only some routes.
Spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) offer warm, clear days and lighter crowds. Summers are hot inland but pleasant by the coast; winters are mild with occasional rain and the clearest mountain views.
LAX is the main gateway, with Burbank and Long Beach as calmer alternatives. From LAX, the new Metro connection and rideshares reach most neighborhoods; budget for traffic, as a 25km trip can take well over an hour.
English dominates but Spanish is everywhere; the dollar is used and tipping (18 to 20 percent) is expected. Distances are huge, so cluster plans geographically. Sunscreen and layers help, as evenings cool fast near the ocean.
