Sofia layers two thousand years beneath your feet, Roman ruins glimpsed through glass pavements, golden Orthodox domes, and Soviet relics, all under the gaze of Vitosha mountain. You'll find it green, cheap, and unhurried, a capital that rewards slow wandering and easy curiosity.
How long to stay?
Two days covers the core: the gilded Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the tiny medieval Boyana Church, Roman ruins along the central boulevards, and a relaxed afternoon strolling Borisova Gradina or the City Garden by the National Theatre.
Four days adds the spectacular Rila Monastery day trip, hiking or a cable-car ride up Vitosha Nature Park on the city's doorstep, plus museums, the buzzing Vitosha Boulevard cafes, and time to soak up Sofia's layered history.
Laid-back, leafy, and underrated. Sofia is a low-key capital with broad boulevards, sprawling parks, and a mountain backdrop. Affordable and friendly, it blends ancient ruins, Orthodox grandeur, and a quietly growing cafe and arts scene.
The city center around the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and Vitosha Boulevard keeps sights and nightlife close. Oborishte and the Doctor's Garden area are elegant and leafy, while Lozenets is trendy, residential, and full of cafes.
Make the Rila Monastery a day trip; it's about two hours out and Bulgaria's most stunning sight. In Sofia, look for the free walking tours and remember Boyana Church and the Rila excursion both reward an early start.
May, June, and September offer warm, pleasant days ideal for parks and Vitosha hikes. Winter turns the nearby mountain into a ski resort minutes from downtown. Summers are hot but the mountain keeps evenings cool.
Sofia Airport sits close to the center, with Metro Line 1 reaching downtown in about 20 minutes. The city also links by train and bus to Plovdiv, Thessaloniki, Belgrade, and Bucharest across the Balkans.
Bulgaria uses the lev and is among Europe's most affordable capitals. Note that locals nod for 'no' and shake their head for 'yes,' the reverse of most countries. Cyrillic script appears everywhere, though signs often include Latin.
