How the split works
Fees that don't depend on the nights are shared evenly. The cleaning fee and the booking's service fee are the same whether someone stayed one night or all of them, so everyone pays the same part of those.
The rest is shared by nights, weighted by room. Each person's nights are multiplied by a weight for where they slept: 1.25 for a bigger room or one with its own bathroom, 1 for their own room, 0.75 for a shared room, 0.5 for a sofa or a bunk. Everyone pays their share of the total of those.
In the example above, Jo stayed 2 of the 4 nights in a room of their own, and Riley stayed all 4 on the sofa. Their nights count the same once the room is weighed in, so they pay the same.
Ways to split a shared stay
- Evenly. Simplest, and fair when everyone stays every night in similar rooms.
- By nights. For the friend who arrives a day late or leaves early.
- By room. For the master bedroom, the room with the bathroom, or the sofa bed.
- By nights and room. What the calculator does: both at once, with fees kept even.
Agree on the method before anyone books. It is an easy conversation when it is about a spreadsheet, and a hard one after the trip.
Split the rest of the trip too
The stay is one cost. Dinners, tickets and taxis add up too. In SwipeSights you add who paid for what, choose who it was for, and it works out who owes whom, in any of 15 currencies, next to the plan the group made together.
Frequently asked questions
How do you split an Airbnb by nights?
Take out the fees that don't depend on the nights (cleaning and service) and share those evenly. Split the rest by each person's nights: someone who stayed 2 of 4 nights pays half as much of it as someone who stayed all 4.
How do you split an Airbnb when the rooms are different?
Give each sleeping spot a weight: a bigger room or one with its own bathroom counts for a bit more, a shared room or a sofa for less. Multiply the weight by the nights stayed and split the stay in proportion. The calculator above does this for you.
Who pays the cleaning fee?
Usually everyone equally, since the place gets cleaned once however long each person stayed. The calculator splits the fees you enter evenly and the rest by nights and rooms.
Should a couple sharing a room pay more?
Many groups count a couple as two people sharing a room: each pays a shared-room share, so together they pay a bit more than one person in a room of their own. Agree on it before you book.
What if someone leaves early or joins late?
Enter the nights they actually stayed. Their share of the stay shrinks with their nights, while the cleaning and service fees stay shared evenly.
