Splitwise is the default for splitting costs with friends, and for good reason: it is simple, handles almost any kind of split, and runs on every phone.
The catch on a trip is that it is one more app next to the one you plan in. If the group already plans the trip together somewhere, splitting there saves a step: everyone is already in it, and so is the plan.
We make SwipeSights, one of the apps below, so we have tried to be fair: where Splitwise is better, we say so. Everything here comes from each app's own site and store listing, checked in October 2026.
What Splitwise does well, and where it stops
Splitwise is the most flexible splitter here. It splits equally, by exact amounts, by percentage or by shares, and it simplifies who owes whom so the group makes fewer payments.
Splitwise
- Free, with a daily limit on how many expenses you can add
- Pro adds unlimited expenses, receipt scanning and currency conversion
- iOS, Android and the web
Where it stops is the trip itself. Splitwise has no plan, no places and no bookings, so the group plans in one app and pays in another. On a busy day abroad, the free plan's daily limit and the missing currency conversion can get in the way too.
What a trip needs from a split
More than one currency
Trips cross borders. At the very least, each balance should stay in the currency the cost was paid in.
Costs that not everyone shares
Not everyone joins every dinner, and not everyone gets the big room.
A clear settle-up
At the end: who pays whom, in as few payments as possible.
Next to the plan
The costs belong with the trip, not in an app half the group forgets to open.
The alternatives
SwipeSights
Full disclosure: we make this one. SwipeSights is a group trip planner first: everyone votes by swiping on real places, the plan is built from the votes, and the split sits on the trip's plan page.
Splitting
- Add what it cost, who paid and who it was for
- Splits it evenly between those people
- Shows who owes whom, and the payments that settle it
- 15 currencies, each balance kept in its own currency
The rest of the trip
- Everyone votes by swiping: right to like, up for a must-see, left to skip
- The plan is built from the votes: days by area, in walking order, around opening hours, with meals in between
- Hotels ranked by how far you would walk to the plan
Missing: Uneven splits (shares or percentages), receipt scanning and currency conversion.
Price: Splitting is free. The plan is free for groups of up to 3 and opens 3 days; Trip Pass from $12.99 or Year Pass from $29.99 for every day and groups of up to 20.
Works on: Splitting on the web, on any phone or computer; the plan on iPhone and the web
Best for: Groups who want the plan and the costs in the same place.

Splitting the stay fairly
The stay is usually the biggest shared cost, and the one where an even split is least fair. The friend on the sofa for two nights should not pay the same as the couple in the big room for four.
Our free Airbnb split calculator splits fees like cleaning evenly, and the rest by nights and by room. It runs in your browser, saves nothing, and copies the result for the group chat.
Money rules for a friendly trip

Most money trouble on a trip comes from things nobody agreed on. A few rules, said out loud before you leave, prevent nearly all of it.
- Agree on what is shared before you go. The stay, the car, groceries and shared tickets usually are; drinks and shopping usually are not.
- Log costs as they happen. A minute when you pay beats an hour of receipts at the end.
- One payer per big booking. One person books the stay or the car, logs it straight away, and everyone pays them back.
- Keep each cost in the currency it was paid in, and agree on a rate before you settle if you need to convert.
- Settle up within a week of getting home, while everyone still remembers the dinner.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best Splitwise alternative for a group trip?
If you also want help planning, pick a trip planner that splits costs: SwipeSights splits costs and builds the plan from the group's votes, Wanderlog has a budget with splitting next to a shared itinerary, Stippl splits for free, and WePlanify settles up in the fewest transfers. If you only need to split costs, Splitwise is still the most flexible.
Is Splitwise free?
Yes, with a daily limit on how many expenses you can add. Splitwise Pro removes the limit and adds receipt scanning and currency conversion.
Can SwipeSights split costs?
Yes, for free. On the trip's plan page on the web, anyone on the trip adds what something cost, who paid and who it was for; SwipeSights splits it evenly and shows who owes whom, in 15 currencies.
How do you split an Airbnb fairly with friends?
Split the fees that do not depend on who stayed, like cleaning, evenly. Split the rest by the nights each person stayed, weighted by the room they had. Our free Airbnb split calculator does it for you.
Which trip apps handle more than one currency?
Splitwise Pro and Lambus PRO convert currencies, and WePlanify's budget works across currencies. SwipeSights keeps each balance in its own currency, across 15, without converting.
Plan it and split it in one place
Create the trip, let everyone swipe, and keep the costs next to the plan.

SwipeSights: plan the whole group trip together.
