Step out of Cologne’s main station in December and the first thing you see is the Cathedral, black against the sky, with a Christmas market glowing at its feet.
That is only the start. Cologne runs half a dozen big markets, each with its own theme: angels on Neumarkt, gnomes in the old town, a harbour of ships by the Chocolate Museum, St Nicholas’ village at the old city gate. They are close enough to walk between in an evening, if you can walk past the Reibekuchen.
Here are the markets worth seeing, when they open in 2026, what to eat and drink, and how to plan the trip with friends.
What are the best Christmas markets in Cologne?
| Market | Where | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Christmas Market at Cologne Cathedral | Roncalliplatz, beside the Cathedral | The classic: a canopy of lights under the Gothic spires |
| Markt der Engel | Neumarkt, city centre | Angels among the stalls, stars in the trees |
| Heimat der Heinzel | Alter Markt and Heumarkt, old town | Cologne’s gnomes, an ice rink, the old town |
| Harbour Christmas Market | Rheinauhafen, by the Chocolate Museum | A maritime market on the Rhine |
| Nikolausdorf | Rudolfplatz, by the Hahnentor gate | St Nicholas’ village by the old city gate |
Roncalliplatz, beside the Cathedral
Christmas Market at Cologne Cathedral

Stalls fill the square beside the Cathedral, under a canopy of thousands of little lights strung between them, with one of the city’s biggest Christmas trees in the middle.
It is the most famous market in the city and the most crowded: weekday afternoons are calmer.
Good to know: Climb the Cathedral’s south tower before dark for the view over the market and the Rhine.
Neumarkt, city centre
Markt der Engel
The Angels’ Market hangs thousands of star lights in the trees of Neumarkt, and angels in white walk among the stalls. One of the prettiest markets after dark.
Alter Markt and Heumarkt, old town
Heimat der Heinzel
Named after the Heinzelmännchen, the helpful gnomes of a Cologne legend who did the townsfolk’s work at night. Gnome-themed stalls fill the old market square, and Heumarkt next door has an ice rink.
Rheinauhafen, by the Chocolate Museum
Harbour Christmas Market
A maritime market of white tents and ship masts on the riverbank, next to the Chocolate Museum, with fish rolls as well as Glühwein.
Rudolfplatz, by the Hahnentor gate
Nikolausdorf
A village of little wooden houses at the foot of the Hahnentor, one of the old city gates, built around St Nicholas.
When are the Cologne Christmas markets open in 2026?
Most of Cologne’s markets open in mid to late November and close on December 23. The first Sunday of Advent is November 29 in 2026, and every market is open by then.
Some of the rinks and smaller markets run on after Christmas. Check each market’s site for the exact dates and hours before you book.
What should you eat and drink at the Cologne Christmas markets?
- Reibekuchen: Cologne’s potato fritters, fried crisp and eaten with apple sauce. The market smell of the city.
- Kölsch: The city’s light local beer, served in small glasses. Brewery taverns refill them until you put a coaster on top.
- Glühwein: Mulled wine in each market’s own mug, with a deposit.
- Champignons: Garlic mushrooms in a creamy sauce, a German market favourite.
- Feuerzangenbowle: Mulled wine with a burning, rum-soaked sugar loaf above it.
How do you plan a Christmas market trip to Cologne?

Two days covers the markets in the evenings and the Cathedral, the Chocolate Museum and a brewery tavern by day.
Stay near the Cathedral or in the old town, and walk between the markets: Cathedral to Heumarkt to the harbour is a 20-minute stroll.
Make it a Rhine trip: Düsseldorf and Bonn each have their own markets and are well under an hour away by train, and Aachen, home of the Printen gingerbread, about an hour.
Why go to the Cologne Christmas markets with friends?
Cologne is built for a group: a different market for every mug, a round of Kölsch in a brewery tavern, and a vote on whose Reibekuchen was best.
In SwipeSights, everyone swipes on real places in Cologne, from the Cathedral to the tavern for afterwards, and the group’s picks become a day-by-day plan.
