Christmas Markets in Strasbourg: The Best Markets, Food and Tips for 2026

Strasbourg calls itself the Capital of Christmas: its Christkindelsmärik has run since 1570, and today the market spreads over about a dozen squares of the old town, with the Great Christmas Tree on Place Kléber. It usually opens in the last week of November and runs until December 24.

In 1570, Strasbourg’s Protestant reformers replaced the old St Nicholas market with a new one in the name of the Christ Child, the Christkindelsmärik, and the city never looked back.

Today Strasbourg calls itself the Capital of Christmas. The whole old town island becomes one market: stalls on about a dozen squares, half-timbered houses dressed in lights and teddy bears, and a fir tree some 30 metres tall on Place Kléber.

Here are the squares worth seeing, when the market opens in 2026, what to eat and drink, and how to plan the trip with friends.

The historic heart of the market: a long square of stalls selling ornaments, candles and crafts, in front of the Opera and the town hall.

Good to know: The old town is an island: expect bag checks on the bridges into it while the market is on.

The stalls crowd around the foot of the cathedral, its pink sandstone spire lit against the night sky. Go inside for the astronomical clock, which has been keeping time and telling stories for centuries.

The old tanners’ quarter, with its canals and half-timbered houses, has a smaller market and the most photogenic streets in town, especially after dark.

Stay on the Grande Île or near the station, and walk. Book early: rooms fill fast on December weekends.

Add Colmar, about 30 minutes by train, for its own Christmas markets among painted houses and canals. Basel is about an hour and a quarter away, and Paris under two hours by TGV.
