In 1434, Dresden’s market sold meat for the Christmas table and a sweet bread called the Striezel. The bread became the Dresdner Christstollen, and the market became the Striezelmarkt, one of the oldest Christmas markets in Germany.
Nearly six centuries on it fills the Altmarkt with the crafts of Saxony: carved wooden figures from the Ore Mountains, candle arches and Herrnhut stars, with a Christmas pyramid of turning figures standing over it all. And around the corner, the rebuilt Frauenkirche rises over another market of its own.
Here are the markets worth seeing, when they open in 2026, what to eat and drink, and how to plan the trip with friends.
What are the best Christmas markets in Dresden?
| Market | Where | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Striezelmarkt | Altmarkt, old town | The famous one: since 1434, the giant pyramid, Stollen |
| Advent on the Neumarkt | Neumarkt, by the Frauenkirche | Old-style stalls under the rebuilt Frauenkirche |
| Medieval Christmas Market in the Stallhof | Stallhof, Residence Palace | Knights, mead and fire pits in a palace courtyard |
| Augustusmarkt | Hauptstraße, Neustadt | A long market across the river, food from around the world |
Altmarkt, old town
Striezelmarkt

Over 200 stalls fill the Altmarkt, with a giant Christmas pyramid of turning wooden figures several storeys high and a huge candle arch at the entrance.
This is the place to buy Ore Mountain wood crafts: nutcrackers, incense smokers shaped like little men, candle arches and pyramids for the table.
Good to know: Busiest on weekend evenings. Come at opening time on a weekday to browse the crafts in peace.
Neumarkt, by the Frauenkirche
Advent on the Neumarkt
Stalls in the style of centuries past, in front of the Frauenkirche, the church destroyed in 1945 and rebuilt stone by stone. Lovely at dusk.
Stallhof, Residence Palace
Medieval Christmas Market in the Stallhof
The old stable courtyard of the Residence Palace turns medieval: fire pits, jugglers, traders in costume and hot mead. There is a small entrance fee.
Hauptstraße, Neustadt
Augustusmarkt
Across the Elbe, a long market down the Hauptstraße with food from around the world and fewer crowds.
When are the Dresden Christmas markets open in 2026?
The Striezelmarkt usually opens on the Wednesday before the first Sunday of Advent: November 25 in 2026, and runs until December 24, closing early on Christmas Eve.
The Stollen Festival is on the Saturday before the second Sunday of Advent, December 5 in 2026: a giant Stollen is paraded through the old town to the Striezelmarkt and cut there with a giant knife. Check the market’s official site for the hours and the parade route.
What should you eat and drink at the Dresden Christmas markets?
- Dresdner Christstollen: The original Stollen, with a protected name: fruit, almonds and butter under a coat of sugar. Buy one to take home.
- Pulsnitzer Pfefferkuchen: Gingerbread from the town of Pulsnitz, near Dresden, in shapes and with fillings.
- Glühwein: Mulled wine in the market’s mug, red or blueberry, the Saxon favourite.
- Quarkkeulchen: Saxon curd pancakes with raisins, fried and dusted with cinnamon sugar.
- Bratwurst: A Thuringian or Saxon sausage, straight off the grill.
How do you plan a Christmas market trip to Dresden?

Two days covers the markets in the evenings and the city by day: the Frauenkirche, the Zwinger, the Procession of Princes painted on its wall of porcelain tiles.
Stay in the old town and walk; the markets are minutes apart. Come for the Stollen Festival weekend if you can, and book early.
Easy trips from Dresden: Meissen and its porcelain are under an hour away, Leipzig and its own big Christmas market about an hour and a quarter, and Prague about two and a half hours by train.
Why go to the Dresden Christmas markets with friends?
Dresden is a market to share: a Stollen split between you, a round of blueberry Glühwein, and the agonising choice of which nutcracker comes home.
