New York doesn’t do Christmas markets the old European way, with one square and a church. It does them the New York way: bigger, louder, open late, and spread across the city, from a skating rink in Midtown to a makers’ market downtown.
In between are the things you come for: the Rockefeller Center tree, the department store windows on Fifth Avenue, the Rockettes, and whole streets of Brooklyn houses covered in lights.
Here are the markets worth your time, when they open in 2026, what else to see, and how to plan the trip with friends.
What are the best Christmas markets in New York?
| Market | Where | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Winter Village at Bryant Park | Bryant Park, Midtown | The big one: a free ice rink and holiday shops |
| Union Square Holiday Market | Union Square, Downtown | The makers’ market: local crafts and food |
| Columbus Circle Holiday Market | Columbus Circle, at Central Park | A smaller market at the corner of Central Park |
| Rockefeller Center | Rockefeller Center, Midtown | Not a market: the tree everyone comes to see |
Bryant Park, Midtown
Winter Village at Bryant Park

Behind the New York Public Library, a free-admission ice rink fills the lawn, ringed by glass-walled holiday shops selling gifts, crafts and food from local makers and brands.
Skating is free if you bring your own skates; rentals and timed skate slots cost extra and sell out on weekends.
Good to know: Book a skate slot ahead for weekends, and come back after dark for the lights on the skyline.
Union Square, Downtown
Union Square Holiday Market
Rows of red-and-white stalls fill the south end of Union Square with local makers: jewellery, prints, candles, clothes and food. The best market for presents nobody else will bring home.
Columbus Circle, at Central Park
Columbus Circle Holiday Market
Stalls at the southwest corner of Central Park, the perfect stop before or after a winter walk in the park.
Rockefeller Center, Midtown
Rockefeller Center

The giant Norway spruce above the skating rink, lit on the Wednesday after Thanksgiving, with the angels of the Channel Gardens leading up to it from Fifth Avenue.
Good to know: Go early in the morning to see the tree without the crowd.
When are the New York Christmas markets open in 2026?
The Winter Village shops usually open in late October and stay until early January; the rink stays open into March. Union Square and Columbus Circle usually open in mid to late November and run until December 24.
The Rockefeller Center tree is lit on the Wednesday after Thanksgiving: December 2 in 2026, and stays up into January. Check each market’s site for the exact dates and hours.
What should you eat and drink at the New York Christmas markets?
- Hot chocolate: The New York market drink: thick, rich and everywhere, often with marshmallows.
- Mulled cider and wine: Hot spiced cider, and mulled wine at the bigger markets.
- Dumplings and raclette: The vendors change every year, but expect food from everywhere, from dumplings to melted cheese on potatoes.
- Pretzels and roasted nuts: From the street carts on every corner of Midtown.
- Black and white cookies: The New York classic, from the bakeries rather than the markets.
How do you plan a Christmas market trip to New York?
Three or four days covers the markets, the tree, the windows on Fifth Avenue and a show, with time for Central Park and a museum.
Stay in Midtown for the walk to Bryant Park and Rockefeller Center, and use the subway for the rest. Book the Radio City Christmas Spectacular and any timed tickets early.
Don’t miss the Dyker Heights lights in Brooklyn, whole streets of houses covered in decorations, best on an evening in mid-December. Philadelphia is under an hour and a half away by train for a second Christmas Village.
Why go to the New York Christmas markets with friends?
New York at Christmas is better in a group: skating badly together, splitting the food at the markets, a show, and a night of lights in Brooklyn.
